Statement. This work is all about the divinity of nature. I reflect on the harmonious interplay between the fleeting, material nature of human existence and the eternal divinity of the natural world.
Eternal Series. This collection consists of unique, 1-1 'future relics', celebrating an ancient, ever-evolving cycle of life that we are part of, a beautiful state of eternal transition. In this piece, a traditional figure represents humanity in a state of deep reflection on this very notion. He stands as a conscious witness to these cycles, contemplating the balance between his own transience and the world's permanence. Yet, even in this state of reflection he remains an active, striving participant. Embodying the innate ecological, intelligent, and creative spark nature has woven into his human spirit.
Method. Inspired by 1st-century C.E. Roman sculpture, I employed classical, hands-on techniques using gypsum and traditional sculpting tools. This approach is a tribute the legacy of human creativity and intelligence. To truly ground the work in living history, I integrated real living moss harvested from my own garden. As a life form that both predates and outlasts humanity, the moss symbolizes a passage of time that transcends the span of any civilization. I bridge the gap between the ancient and the digital (modern) by fusing 3D modeling with the hands-on heritage of plaster casting. To reflect the passage of time, I then deconstructed the piece, seeking the grace inherent in decay. This deliberate act of weathering the sculpture allowed me to embrace the Japanese Wabi-Sabi philosophy; finding true beauty not in finished form, but in the worn and the weathered.
